Instead of two superintendents, how about one?

To the Editor:

In light of the fact that the Central High School District is appointing an interim superintendent and is searching for a permanent superintendent, possibly one of the qualifications would be to take on the elementary level as well. District 13 is also seeking to replace a superintendent by the end of the school year. Why hire two when, in the future, you may have to let one go?

We are looking into consolidation. Contracts must be specific in their language, reflecting the possibility of consolidation, and I do expect our boards to demand this language in any contract that is written for a new superintendent. The contract for the new hire should have language to reflect that in the event that a consolidation takes place, they will be representing  all the schools in Valley Stream.

Quoting Dr. Elizabeth Lison, “Some tough choices have to be made. We cannot put it on the backs of our taxpayers.” The hiring of one superintendent to fill two positions is a good start. If we do not start now, there will not be enough young people to fill our schools. They will be moving out of New York to a state where they can afford to live well and not live just to pay taxes.
