Johnny Esquivel first learned the craft of upholstering 20 years ago at a furniture manufacturer in North Carolina. Within a year, he was promoted to foreman. In 2002, he moved to Manhattan, where he continued his trade, working with designers on high-end furniture.

Three years ago, he followed his dream of going out on his own, and opened Johnny's Custom Upholstery in Valley Stream.

Whether it is a sofa, sectional or dining room chairs, when furniture gets worn, one is faced with the decision of replacing it or re-upholstering. Esquivel points out that upholsterers work from the frame on upwards, just as a furniture maker would do.

So, if the furniture has a good quality frame, re-upholstering can be a money-saving option. By using modern materials paired with traditional skills, the results are often better than the original piece. Fabrics, leathers, vinyls and even exotic animal skins are available in numerous colors and patterns, with quality to choose from that will suit many budgets.

If the item to be re-upholstered is an antique, its restoration can include gilding, French polishing and repairs. Using the best equipment on the market, the latest repair technology, and environmentally friendly products, Johnny's can bring new life into old items. Dents, scratches, stains and breakages can all be eliminated or fixed.

Re-upholstering existing furniture is only one facet of what this company does. From custom-made slip covers and pillows to all kinds of window treatments, such as drapery, cornices, valances and shades, Johnny's Custom Upholstery is a place to seek out when decorating or simply freshening up a room. They can upholster an ottoman or headboard, or cover a bedside table, helping to bring a room together aesthetically. Even walls can be upholstered, adding insulation and sound proofing.

Johnny's Custom Upholstery handles commercial accounts as well. Working with public venues such as theaters, restaurants, medical facilities, they do reupholstering on stadium seats, bar stools, booths, hospital beds, dental chairs, etc. New webbing, padding, cushioning and spring systems can be a cost-effective way to give any business site a total new look.
