Kids give pumpkins some personality

Posted

Bright white T-shirts provided by the Valley Stream Chamber of Commerce were quickly covered in spots of black, blue, green, red, yellow and other colors after children got to work at the village’s annual pumpkin painting contest last Saturday morning at Hendrickson Park.

About 150 children gathered to turn orange pumpkins into their personal canvasses. The Recreation Department provided all the supplies, and volunteers from the Valley Stream Youth Council helped out. Prizes were awarded for the scariest and funniest pumpkins for each time slot, judged by Chamber President Debbi Gyulay, former Mayor Joanne Antun and Youth Council board member Tony Spezio.

Each child got to take their pumpkin home along with a participation trophy.
