LIAW to help provide scholarships for students

The New York Chapter of the National Association of Water Companies recently announced a scholarship program for high school seniors interested in pursuing a career in the water utility industry or related fields. As a member of the chapter, Long Island American Water is participating in the program by offering two $2,500 scholarships to high school students in its service area, who will be attending a university or college in New York and pursuing a water utility industry-related degree or other relevant field.

“Educating the next generation in water related sciences is essential to ensuring the future of our nation’s water services,” said William Varley, chairman of the chapter and president of Long Island American Water.  “By supporting this scholarship program, we hope to encourage more young adults who are interested in pursuing a career in the water industry.”

This scholarship is being offered to New York high school seniors in Long Island American Water’s service area who meet the following criteria:

  • United States citizen
  • New York resident for five years and resides within Long Island American Water’s service area: Atlantic Beach, Baldwin, Baldwin Harbor, Barnum Island, Bay Park, Cedarhurst, East Atlantic Beach, East Rockaway, Harbor Isle, Hewlett, Hewlett Bay Park, Hewlett Harbor, Hewlett Neck, Inwood, Island Park, Lakeview, Lawrence, Lynbrook, Malverne, Meadowmere, North Woodmere, Oceanside, Roosevelt, South Hempstead, Valley Stream, West Hempstead, Woodmere and Woodsburgh
  • High school senior pursuing a degree at a New York college or university (two- or four-year) as an undergraduate student (part- or full-time)
  • At least a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 GPA grading scale
  • Enrolled in a curriculum related to the water utility industry or similar field such as natural resource management, environmental sciences, biology, chemistry, engineering, computer science, environmental law, etc.

To enter, students must return a completed application, along with their high school transcript and three letters of recommendation to the chapter by April 6. Students can find additional information along with the application on Long Island American Water’s website, longislandamwater.com.
