Man struck by train in Island Park

Survives hit, service temporarily suspended

A man in a motorized scooter crossing the tracks on Long Beach Road in Island Park was struck by a westbound Long Island Rail Road train this afternoon.

The unidentified man was hit by the 4:29 train coming from Long Beach and survived. He was taken away by ambulance to a local hospital.

"If they removed him from the scene, it should clear up pretty quickly," said MTA Long Island Rail Road spokesman Salvatore Arena.

As of 5:30, westbound service to Penn Station was restored, but eastbound service is still down. According to the MTA's website, the 5:20 p.m. train from Long Beach has been canceled. The 5:23 p.m. train from Penn to Long Beach seems to still be running. The 5:14 p.m. train from Long Beach was canceled. It will be replaced by the 6:38 p.m. train from Long Beach to Atlantic Terminal. Riders will have to transfer at Jamaica for service to Penn Station.

UPDATED AT 6:30 P.M.

Service has been restored to both east and westbound tracks.
