Members of the Valley Stream, Elmont and Malverne fire departments, with others operating on standby, worked to extinguish a fire early Tuesday evening that had engulfed the attic of a house on North Corona Avenue, fire officials reported.

Family members living in the house, and their pets, including a rare parrot, were able to safely escape, and one firefighter sustained a minor injury, according to the Valley Stream Fire Department Facebook page.

Firefighters were notified of the incident at around 6:30 p.m. Chief Jason Croak said, and it took them roughly 30 minutes to extinguish the blaze, which resulted in serious fire damage to the attic area of the home, a hole in the roof and water and smoke damage throughout the rest of the building.

In addition the three departments on the scene, the Lynbrook, Hewlett, Woodmere and Lawrence-Cedarhurst fire departments were on standby to assist with any potential emergencies elsewhere in Valley Stream. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, Croak said.
