A North High School student traveled to Washington, D.C. on June 24, where her winning artwork now hangs in a pedestrian tunnel that runs between a Congressional office building and the U.S. Capitol building.

Carla Perez won the 2015 Congressional Art Competition for New York’s 4th Congressional District with her piece, “Oceanic Beauty.” The work will hang in the busy corridor for the rest of the year.

Rep. Kathleen Rice met Perez and her father, Norm, in Rice’s office before Perez attended a reception for winners from across the country in the Capitol building.

“It was wonderful to welcome Carla and her father into our office, and I’m so proud to see her work representing our district each time I walk to the House floor,” Rice said. “Carla is a gifted, passionate young woman with a bright future ahead of her, and I can’t wait to see what she will accomplish with her tremendous talent. I thank Carla and all of the students who participated in this year’s competition, and I look forward to the great work our district’s students will produce next year.”

The contest is sponsored by the Congressional Institute, and solicits submissions from each Congressional district in the country. More than 650,000 high schools have participated since the competition started in 1982.
