North H.S. students walk barefoot for charity

After-school club raises poverty awareness by walking with a purpose

Approximately 20 students from North High School’s Students Against Destructive Decisions Club participated in a barefoot, mile-long walk at the school to raise awareness about global poverty on Oct. 16.

By walking without shoes, students experienced the discomfort of poverty firsthand and gained a greater appreciation for helping others in need. The event was sponsored by Soles4Souls, a global nonprofit committed to fighting poverty by collecting and distributing clothing.

“I truly love the Soles4Souls charity and hope to continue to contribute to their cause: stomping out poverty one sole at a time,” said Ada Duran, advisor for the SADD club, after the event.

Soles4Souls supports orphanages, homeless shelters, women’s domestic abuse shelters, inner-city hospitals and micro-enterprises in developing countries. The organization aims to eradicate extreme poverty by the year 2050. Duran joined the students for the early morning walk.

Later this year, Duran plans to raise money to support the charity by running the New York City Marathon in its name. She hopes to collect $1,000 for the campaign, with every dollar securing a pair of shoes. In recent years, North High School has donated more than 1,000 pairs to those in need in the United States and globally.
