A 61-year-old man from Bellerose was fatally struck by a car on Merrick Road in Valley Stream shortly after noon on Monday.

The man, whom police did not identify, tried to cross Merrick Road heading north, at Green Street, when he was struck by a 2002 Audi Allroad heading east.

The victim suffered multiple trauma injuries and was taken to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The driver, a 75-year-old man, was not injured.

A safety check was performed on the car at the scene, and it was released to the owner. Police were investigating the incident, but said that there was no criminality involved.

Mayor Ed Fare issued a statement of condolence to the victim’s loved ones. “Our sympathies go out to the family and friends of this individual at this most difficult time. We wish them all Godspeed and strength in the days, months and years ahead,” he said. “While Merrick Road is a county-owned road, the Village of Valley Stream takes these incidents very seriously, and will continue to do whatever it takes, working with the Nassau County 5th Precinct and county officials, to ensure safety for all pedestrians and motorists who travel through our village.”
