Search is on for assistant principal at Memorial Junior High

Lynn Winters, assistant principal for pupil services at Memorial Junior High School, resigned on Aug. 15 after one year with the Valley Stream Central High School District.

Michael Kaplan, a former assistant principal at Memorial, was appointed as her temporary replacement on Aug. 23. Kaplan retired last June after 22 years as an assistant principal and administrative associate with the district. He will work on a per diem basis at Memorial until mid-October, according to Board of Education President Jeanne Greco-Jacobs.

“Mr. Kaplan was great,” Greco-Jacobs said, “and he knows the building and people well.”

The board will seek a permanent replacement for Winters. Applications are already coming in, Greco-Jacobs said. “No one’s lagging behind because it’s the beginning of the school year,” she said.

Officials are looking to start interviews immediately, and hope to fill the position by mid-October.
