Shaw kids take a swing at golf

Posted

Students at the Shaw Avenue School got a taste of springtime sporting with a special golf program in Nicholas Clark’s physical education classes. The gymnasium was transformed into a nine-hole miniature gold course for the kindergarten through third-grade classes.

Students learned proper putting form, technique and golf terminology before stepping onto the “green,” where they were soon cheering using their new jargon, excitedly announcing their birdies and pars.

The unit featured a “word wall” where students discussed vocabulary words they would need to understand in order to succeed, including communication, fair play, patience and problem solving. Math skills were also a key component, with each class keeping track of their scores using a scorecard, which they used to analyze their progress over the course of the unit.
