Streamers perform at New Year's Orange Bowl

Central High School’s kickline team returned from Miami last week with new friends, new techniques and a world-class experience under their belts, according to coach Michelle Maci.

“It was a great experience for them,” Maci said. “A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and they really loved it.”

The Streamers were placed in the advanced group based on a survey they filled out regarding their skill level and experience. They danced alongside more than 400 students from high schools around the country, and participated in a dance convention on the second day of their visit where they learned choreography from well-known professionals for five styles of dance, including hip-hop, jazz and Bollywood, followed by a showcase of the new moves.

“Their favorite was hip-hop,” said Maci. She added that the hip-hop choreographer, Luther Brown of the show “So You Think You Can Dance,” singled out the team and said they “gave him life.”

Mingling with so many other students was itself a learning experience, Maci said. The team learned new techniques and formed friendships with fellow dancers from around the country — some practice for students soon to be college-bound.

The team received a plaque for its participation.
