Valley Stream North senior Cyle Sicurella and Valley Stream South senior Malik Hill took home wrestling tournament titles last Saturday in the Ralph Jansson and Paul Grammatico events, respectively.

For Sicurella, who competes in the 130-pound weight class, it was his second first-place finish of the month. He also captured the Hank Parris Tournament in Plainview. “He’s undefeated so far and I expect him to contend for the county championship,” Spartans coach Tom Maddock said of Sicurella, who placed third in Nassau Division II last season.

North also had three runners-up in the Jansson and placed sixth out of 10 schools despite only eight participants. Sophomore Shane Saltzman, coming off a tremendous freshman campaign that saw him go 28-0 against Nassau opponents and win the 96-pound county title, was second at 119. “He’s going to be up three or four weight classes,” Maddock said. “He might go 112 toward the end of the season. We’ll wait and see.”

Senior Kevin Hall was second at 152 and junior Will Hunter was second at 285. Hunter and 112-pound sophomore Jesse Oppenheimer are returning All-County winners and Hall and senior captain Chris Aumuller (130) both placed fourth in Division II.

The Spartans compete in Conference 4B along with Carle Place, Manhasset, Mineola, Oyster Bay, Roosevelt and Wheatley. Maddock said the roster has been bolstered by an influx of freshmen — 21 to be exact. “We’ve got 39 kids,” he said. “I’m pleased with the numbers and how hard everyone’s working.”
South led by Hill’s four pins
Hill’s pin of Andrew Alaggio of Babylon in 3:24 was the highlight for Valley Stream South in the Grammatico tourney. The 152-pound Hill had the most pins in the least time (four in 6:16) in the event. “Malik has been pretty dominant,” Falcons coach Mike Buonagurio said of the returning county qualifier.
