UPDATE: Police make arrest in Valley Stream shooting

Nassau County Police have arrested a man and charged him with second-degree murder in the fatal shooting of a man inside a home on East Hawthorne Avenue in Valley Stream early Friday morning.

Deon O. Ewers, 50, the estranged husband of a woman who lived in the home, was arrested on Saturday in Oceanside.

According to police, Ewers, of Los Angeles, arrived in New York the night before the shooting. His estranged wife and 14-year-old son were inside the house at the time of the shooting and were not injured. Police said they believed the victim and Ewers’s estranged wife were in a relationship.

The 34-year-old victim suffered multiple gunshot wounds from a semi-automatic handgun. The victim was taken to South Nassau Communities Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 8:04 a.m.

He was arraigned in Hempstead on Sunday.
