Village Board
The board of trustees will hold its next regular business meeting on Monday, Sept. 21 at 7:30 p.m. in the Village Hall court room.

Drive better and save money
A defensive driving course will be held on Saturday, Sept. 26 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Hendrickson Park administration building. The cost is $45. Improve your driving skills, get up to to four points off your license and save 10 percent on your collision or liability insurance. To sign up call (516) 825-8570.

Crafts fair
The village will hold its annual fall crafts fair on Saturday, Oct. 3 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Hendrickson Park.

For little creators
An eight-session arts and crafts program for children ages 5-10, and a woodworking program for children ages 7-12, begins next month. Classes are Saturdays Oct. 3, 10, 17, Nov. 7, 14, 21, 28 and Dec. 5 from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Hendrickson Park administration building. The cost is $55. For more information call (516) 825-8570.

Tax Forum
Town of Hempstead Receiver of Taxes Donald Clavin will hold a tax forum on Thursday, Sept. 17 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Valley Stream Village Hall court room.

Town Board
The Hempstead Town Council will hold its next meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 22 at 10:30 a.m. at the Nathan L.H. Bennett Pavilion, 1 Washington St. in Hempstead.

County Legislature
The Nassau County Legislature has scheduled its next meeting for Monday, Sept. 21 at 10 a.m. in the legislative chambers, 1550 Franklin Ave. in Mineola.

Information fair
Nassau County will hold an information and assistance fair at the Elmont Library on Wednesday, Sept. 23 from 10 a.m to noon. Guests can get applications for benefits and entitlement, food stamps, and EPIC and HEAP programs, receive a blood pressure screening and learn about social security and services for veterans and the physically challenged.

Events

Island Harvest food drive
Each Wednesday in September, Island Harvest volunteers will be at the Long Island Rail Road station in Valley Stream from 5:30 a.m. to noon. Be a better boater
Hempstead Bay Power Squadron will present the new America’s Boating Course, version 3, at Valley Stream Memorial Junior High School on Tuesday, Sept. 22 at 7:30 p.m. The course is approved by New York State to fulfill the training requirement to operate a personal water craft. Chamber gala
The Chamber of Commerce will hold its annual gala dinner on Thursday, Oct. 1 from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. at the Inn at New Hyde Park. Curtiss Airfield Day

“Lives of Girls and Women” by Alice Munro will be discussed on Tuesday, Sept. 29 at 7 p.m.

Computer classes
An Internet basics and library databases course will be held on Saturday, Oct. 3 from 10 to 11 a.m. A Microsoft Word Basics class is scheduled from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. followed by a Microsoft Excel Basics class from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.

Children’s Room
The children’s room has a wide variety of programs scheduled for September with children’s librarian Jaclyn Kunz. Programs include Bouncing Babies, Alphabet Soup, Story Craft programs, and other seasonal events. Golden oldies
The Golden Tone Orchestra will present music of the 1930s and 40s in the library theater on Sunday, Sept. 20 at 2 p.m. The group consists of local senior musicians, who devote their efforts to bring “Big Band Music” to fellow Long Islanders.

Family Pre-School Hour
Children and their families can enjoy an hour of singing, dancing, storytelling and a craft on Monday, Sept. 21 at 10:15, 11:30 a.m. or 7 p.m.

Tuesday Feature Film
“Defiance” will be shown on Sept. 22 at 2 p.m. The movie is rated R.

Teen cuisine
A quesadilla cooking workshop will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 23 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Valley Stream Baseball League

Cancer Support Group
