Valley Stream postpones hearing on Gibson buildings

Posted

The Valley Stream village board has postponed its planned public hearing on Monday night regarding the use of eminent domain to take over blighted property in Gibson.

Late last year, the village began eminent domain proceedings by hiring a law firm experienced in property condemnation. Legally, the village must hold a public hearing before it can move forward.

Village officials said the reason the meeting is being rescheduled is because there is the potential of a better deal. The hearing has been rescheduled for May 19.

A housing development proposed by property owner Dr. Leonard Bleicher was approved for the site, but was never built. The dozen storefronts in the two buildings have sat empty for several years.

The village board's regular meeting will still take place at 7:30 p.m. on March 24.
