Village honors lifelong resident and volunteer

The Village of Valley Stream honored resident Florence Gunther, 90, on Monday for her milestone birthday on Dec. 2 and for her dedicated involvement with organizations around the village.

Gunther graduated from Central High School in 1944. She and her husband, Joe, raised two daughters in the village, Linda and Diane.

Joe died recently. They were married for 66 years.

Gunther has worked as a volunteer at Mercy Hospital, with the Valley Stream Historical Society, the Central High School Alumni Association and with her parish, Blessed Sacrament Church. She is currently an active member of the the Central High School Alumni Association and serves as treasurer of the Valley Stream Historical Society.

Fare said that he was happy to honor a fellow lifelong village resident and Central High graduate. “Florence, we know you recently lost your husband, Joe, who you were married to for 66 years,” Fare said. “Although it is a difficult time for you and your family, please accept our most sincere 90th birthday congratulations.”

Fare presented Gunther with a citation.
