Water contamination alert is lifted

Posted

The Water Authority of Western Nassau County has lifted its boil water warning after two days. The alert was put into place after a site on the North Valley Stream-Elmont border tested positve for E. coli on Tuesday.

Most of North Valley Stream and 12 streets in the western end of the village of Valley Stream were affected, as well as parts of Elmont, Franklin Square, New Hyde Park, Floral Park, Stewart Manor and Garden City.

Water Authority officials say this is a localized issue. A water sample taken at Dutch Broadway and North Fletcher Avenue on July 18 tested positive for E. coli. A sample taken the following day did not show any E. coli, but another nearby located tested positive Total Coliform bacteria.

Results from 171 water test samples on Friday night revealed no further contamination and it is no longer necessary to boil water or use bottled water, according to Water Authority officials.

No contamination was found at any point in the Water Authority's wells and water storage tanks. The positive test for E. coli came at a private location at Dutch Broadway and North Fletcher Avenue.

Water Authority officials say they will continue to routinely check for E. coli and Total Coliform bacteria through regular testing.

Customers of Long Island American Water were not affected by this.
