Street Scene
The Pulitzer Prize-winning play by Elmer Rice, is given new life at Adelphi University. The limited run stars Adelphi theatre majors as well as members of the local community, directed by Associate Professor of Performing Arts Margaret Lally. Rice’s play takes place on the front stoop of a New York City tenement building in the summer of 1929. Though 80 years have passed, themes such as immigrant families’ struggles against intolerance and neighborhood violence still persist today. The play is described as portraying “social realism,” a genre that more frankly depicts the American experience.

Now through Sunday, Oct. 11; performance times vary. A post-show discussion follows the Friday, Oct. 9, 11 a.m. performance. $15, $10 seniors and alumni, $7 students. Adelphi University's Performing Arts Center, Olmsted Theatre, 1 South Ave., Garden City. (516) 877-4000 or www.aupac.adelphi.edu.

Telling Tales

Shalom/Sholom!
This original theatrical work, conceived and performed by Bob Spiotto, is produced in conjunction with the 150th anniversary of the birth of Sholom Aleichem. Born Solomon Rabinowitz in 1859, the man who became known to the world as Sholom Aleichem, aka the Yiddish Mark Twain, left his literary mark on the world, weaving tales that once would have been told in the market square or around a warm fire. Spiotto presents a smorgasbord of stories, re-creating them much as they might once have been heard, and with the same precarious balance of humor, horror, pathos, and philosophical insight.

Friday and Saturday, Oct. 9-10, 8 p.m.; Sunday, Oct. 11, 2 p.m. $18, $16 seniors, $13 students. Hofstra University’s Emily and Jerry Spiegel Theater, California Ave., South Campus, Hempstead. (516) 463-6644 or www.hofstra.edu/HofstraEntertainment.
