Election 2013

Who's on the ballot in Valley Stream?

With Election Day looming, decisions voters make on Tuesday will shape the future of Nassau County and the Town of Hempstead for years to come.

The marquee race this year is the rematch between Ed Mangano and Tom Suozzi for county executive. Suozzi is looking to get the job back that he lost to Mangano four years ago.

The balance of power in the Nassau County Legislature is also at stake, with all 19 seats up this year and the Republicans now holding a slim one-vote majority. In Valley Stream, voters will be choosing from candidates in one of two seats.

The west end of the village, as well as most of North Valley Stream and all of South Valley Stream, is part of the 3rd Legislative District, currently represented by Democrat Carrié Solages. Two years ago, Solages defeated Republican John Ciotti, an original member of the Legislature.

Republicans are looking to win that seat back, and have put up 25-year-old Naomie Jean-Philippe, an Elmont resident and a third-year Hofstra Law School student.

South Valley Stream was previously a part of the 7th District, represented by Howard Kopel. With the new district maps that take effect with this election, the community of about 6,000 residents moves into the 3rd District.

The east end of Valley Stream will remain a part of the 6th District, represented by Republican Fran Becker. He is running unopposed for his 10th term.

Valley Stream voters will cast their ballots in several other countywide races. In another rematch, County Comptroller George Maragos, a Republican, is trying to fend off Democrat Howard Weitzman, the man he beat four years ago.

District Attorney Kathleen Rice, a Democrat, is seeking her third term. She is being challenged by Howard Sturim, a Republican with prosecutorial experience who now works as a law clerk.

County Clerk Maureen O’Connell is also trying to win a third term. Her opponent is Democrat Laura Gillen, of Rockville Centre.

In the Town of Hempstead, Supervisor Kate Murray is seeking her sixth term. The Republican from Levittown has held the post since 2003, and is being challenged by Felix Procacci, of Franklin Square. He is a Republican who has been endorsed by the Democratic Party.

The other townwide race is for clerk. Republican Nasrin Ahmad, who was appointed to the position shortly after former Town Clerk Mark Bonilla was removed from office, is seeking to extend her career in the office which has spanned 15 years. Her challenger is Democrat Jasmine Garcia-Vieuz, an attorney.

As is the case at the county level, redistricting has also impacted the town. Boundaries of the six council districts were redrawn, and now the 4th District will include Valley Stream. About 10 blocks of the village, in the southwest corner of Gibson, are part of the district that is represented by Republican Anthony Santino. His challenger is Democrat Patrick Gillespie.

The rest of Valley Stream will not have a council district election, because Councilmen James Darcy and Ed Ambrosino are not up for re-election until 2015.
