An old-school Thanksgiving

Posted

Kindergartners at East Broadway Elementary School experienced Thanksgiving last week in way they likely never have before. Dressed as Pilgrims and Indians, the students started out by making their own butter, then had a simple meal of nuts, berries and corn muffins.

Teacher Valerie Kovel taught the students how to make butter on Nov. 24. Each child got a small jar, then added a little bit of salt and a lot of cream before shaking their jars for several minutes to get the butter to thicken. Kovel said the Pilgrims had to churn their own butter and gather their own food, hence the nuts and berries treat.
