Forest City rings in Easter with egg hunt

With Easter just around the corner, it was no surprise that more than 60 children came out to the annual Forest City Spring Fling on March 19. Hosted by the Forest City Community Association in North Wantagh, children of all ages had fun hunting for Easter eggs and nibbling on bunny treats.

“People in the community, especially in Forest City, are very close and we like to hold these events for families and children that are here,” Civic Affairs Chairman Tom Kohlman said. “It usually takes about a few weeks to plan the events, with getting everything organized and working with the Town of Hempstead.”

The Spring Fling has taken place at the Forest City clubhouse for more than a dozen years, and for families moving into the neighborhood, it can be a great way to meet new people. For Megan Mergel, the event was an opportunity to expose her 2-year-old daughter, Kayla, to their new community. “We moved here only a few years ago from Oyster Bay,” she said, “and because our kids aren’t of school age yet, this event is a good way to meet new parents, have the kids run around and have fun.

“It just seems to keep everyone connected,” Mergel added. “It helps them to understand what Easter is all about and how to interact with other kids.”

Members of the FCCA said they were happy that the event was a success once again, and look forward to holding their annual Fall Festival on Oct. 15.

“Seeing all of the kids rush the grass for eggs was my favorite part,” Kohlman said with a laugh. “It’s all about them just having a good time.”
