Lexi Thompson is named an All-American

MacArthur senior goalkeeper Alexandra Thompson has been named to the United Soccer Coaches High School All-American team — the highest honor that a high school athlete can earn — following one of MacArthur’s best soccer seasons ever.

Thompson played an integral role on a team that won the Long Island championship this fall. Up until the Generals’ 1-0 victory in the Class A finals over Shoreham-Wading River last month, Thompson had surrendered only one goal the entire season. A week before the championship game, MacArthur shut out Garden City 5-0, in a game that included five saves by Thompson.

“She is the best high school goalie around here that anybody will ever see,” MacArthur coach Steve Costello said.

A lifelong Levittown resident, Thompson is also a lifelong soccer player. She attended Gardiners Avenue Elementary School and then Jonas E. Salk Middle School before coming to MacArthur, which takes in students from Levittown, Wantagh and Seaford.

“I’ve been playing soccer for a really long time,” Thompson said. “I don’t know exactly when I started, but I would say probably 4 or 5 years old. I’ve also played basketball, volleyball and lacrosse. But soccer has always been my number one.”

Though she was ineligible to play for MacArthur in her freshman year, Thompson has been on the team for her sophomore through senior years and has received honors including All County Goalkeeper of the Year.

Outside school, she has also played for the Levittown Lady Galaxy soccer team, the Long Island Soccer Club, and SUSA FC soccer academy, which has helped her hone her skills year-round.
