MacArthur goes pink for a cause

The MacArthur High School volleyball team hosted its annual Dig Pink event on Thursday to help raise awareness for breast cancer.

The girls’ varsity volleyball team played a friendly game against faculty members in the gym for bragging rights. Everyone involved sported pink camo T-shirts and pink ribbon tattoos for the cause.

“This is something both the faculty and the community looks forward to every year,” teacher Vincent Causeman said. “The community comes together pretty much for any event we have at MacArthur and it’s very special.
“The Dig Pink event is an opportunity for teachers to show any skill that they may have against the kids,” he added. “It’s a lot of fun and more importantly for a great cause.”

The girls’ junior varsity team and boys’ volleyball team also had a chance to play against faculty members at the event.

“For the past four years that I have been the varsity coach, we’ve really been able to recruit a lot of the student body, staff and family members,” varsity volleyball coach Diann Drury said. “Our proceeds go toward breast cancer, we sell raffles and the girls enjoy the volleyball aspect.
The boys’ football team came in at halftime to do some cheerleading, “Which brings in a large crowd for us,” Drury added. “Overall the girls and the faculty are all here for a good cause.”

The football team performance delighted the crowd with its pink pom poms, sideline cheers and even a skilled pyramid. The girls from the cheerleading team worked with the boys after school to help them perfect their routine for the event.

“The breast cancer awareness game is very important to a lot of people in the community,” football player Vincent Martino said. “This is fun because all my friends and half the football team are doing this. We have three cheers prepared and then we go into our stunt groups for a final pyramid at the end.”
