An 80-year-old woman was yanked up to safety from the Wantagh Park Marina Wednesday afternoon by an off-duty Nassau County Police Department officer, who ripped up multiple boards from the marina dock after spotting her underneath.

The officer, Gregory Caserta, was walking with his father-in-law in Wantagh Park when the woman fell into the water. Caserta and the woman’s husband reacted immediately, but initially could not locate her.

While looking near the docks, Caserta noticed the woman had drifted underneath. Caserta and his father-in-law removed multiple boards from the dock to pull the woman from the water and back to safety.

Caserta was previously honored in 2016 for his involvement in an NCPD unit’s saving of two passengers from a sinking car in Island Park’s Broad Channel.

Nassau County Police and the Wantagh Fire Department arrived at the marina shortly thereafter. The woman reportedly remained conscious throughout and is expected to recover.
