A three-way race

The Nassau County Legislature’s 2nd District race features a Town of North Hempstead councilman, a retired Nassau County police detective and a community activist. The three candidates are vying to represent a legislative district that encompasses Lakeview, portions of West Hempstead, East Meadow, Hempstead, Westbury and New Cassel, among other areas.

No matter who wins, there will be new county leadership for the district, which has been represented by Westbury resident Roger Corbin since the Legislature’s inception in 1995. North Hempstead Councilman Robert Troiano defeated Corbin in a Democratic primary on Sept. 15 to advance to the general election.

Troiano, a 46-year Westbury resident, said he wants to extend his work as a councilman to the county level and help improve the quality of life for district residents. When he was elected in November 2003, Troiano became the first African-American to serve on the North Hempstead town council. He had previously worked on Wall Street for more than 25 years and served on the Westbury Board of Education, including six years as its president.

During his service on the town board, Troiano, 56, noted, he helped bring nearly $100 million in private investment funding to an effort to revitalize Prospect Avenue in New Cassel. He is now working with other North Hempstead officials to develop a $25 million multi-purpose community center in the hamlet, which adjoins the Village of Westbury.

“This election is about change and who is best prepared to lead this district right now, and I’m that candidate,” Troiano said. “I think I have the financial and government experience that is needed to serve on the Legislature.”

The 2nd L.D. is a mostly Democratic district, but Republican candidate Derek Partee has not let that discourage him. The race marks Partee’s second bid for elected office. He ran unsuccessfully for the Village of Hempstead’s Board of Trustees last March. Partee spent 25 years on the county police force, including 17 years as a detective, five years on the homicide squad, and three years in the FBI.
