Posted

The Lakeview Public Library is an ideal place to go to celebrate and honor the month of Februay, Black History Month. We have some special and notable events and displays, and encourage everyone to explore our extensive black heritage collection. You may find something in which you’re already interested or discover something unexpected.

The library’s black heritage collection contains circulating and reference materials that depict black experience, history and culture. The collection is designed to enlighten, educate and entertain the Lakeview community and everyone who enters the library.

Celebrate Black History Month at the Lakeview Public Library on Saturday, Feb. 11 from noon to 4 p.m. with special performances and presentations by Voices of Virtue and Lady Laura & Dat Band. There will also be a cultural workshop where refreshments will be served. From 2 to 4 p.m. we will be showing “Hidden Colors,” a documentary about the real and untold history of people of color around the globe. This special program is open to all and sponsored by the Nassau County Guardians and County Legislator Robert Troiano. Please register in advance.

On Tuesdays in February from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. we will be showing “Eyes on the Prize,” a definitive and award-winning story of the civil rights era that is told from the perspectives of the seemingly ordinary people who did extraordinary things and launched a movement that made the life and freedoms we all cherish possible.

We will also be hosting an African dance performance with Shayna Prophet that all are invited to see on Wednesday, Feb. 15, from 6 to 7 p.m. Children’s movies will be shown on Saturday, Feb. 11 and 26 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. On Monday, Feb. 27 from 6 to 7 p.m. teens in grades 7 through 12 can learn how to use the African-American experience database.
