Franklin Square, West Hempstead Scouts honored at county ceremony

On March 12, 1912, Girl Scout founder Juliette Gordon Low officially registered the organization's first 18 girl members in Savannah, Georgia. Today, there are more than 10 million Girl Scouts and Girl Guides worldwide. Girl Scouts of Nassau County marked its 100th anniversary of Girl Scouts on March 12 with a day-long open house at the Girl Scouts of Nassau County’s headquarters in Garden City. All Girl Scouts, volunteers, parents and alumnae were invited.

Prior to the event, on March 9, GSNC, along with Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano, lit the Nassau Executive Building Dome the color green — the signature Girl Scout color. Local legislators also signed the “To Get Her There” pledge, signifying their continued support for the county’s Girl Scouts.

On March 11, Lynbrook Girl Scout Cadette Troop 2237 named the park located at Huntington Avenue and Windsor Place in Lynbrook the first “Juliette Gordon Low Park” on Long Island.

Scouts honored

On March 18, Girl Scouts from throughout Nassau County united for the 2012 Adult Recognitions Awards Ceremony, held at the Long Island University Post Hillwood Commons Auditorium in Brookville, in celebration of the 100th anniversary of Girl Scouts USA.

Girl Scouts of Nassau County includes nearly 21,000 girls and 7,000 adult members.

Several members of the West Hempstead/Franklin Square Girl Scouts Association were honored, including Lillian Chajkewicz, Ellen De Mott, Josephine Detz, Carol Grassi and Debbie Ventimiglia, who received the GSUSA Appreciation pin, which recognizes volunteers who actively provide outstanding service, meeting one or more of the Council goals in membership growth and retention, fund development, or increased community visibility in at least one area.

Additionally, local members Maureen Imbesi, Anne Marie Spensieri-Fidis and Jo Lynn Tripp were received the GSNC Continuing Service Pin, which is presented to volunteers that have received the Appreciation, Honor or Thanks Badge and have continued service for an additional five years.

Year of the Girl

Girl Scouts of the USA recently declared 2012 the “Year of the Girl” in a move to rally the nation around the cause of girls' leadership.
