The Gilbert & Sullivan Light Opera Company of Long Island

Posted

Before the beloved comic operas of Gilbert and Sullivan became a part of theatrical repertory, there was W.S. Gilbert. The Gilbert & Sullivan Light Opera Company brings W.S. Gilbert’s play “Sweethearts,” to area audiences, on Saturday, Dec. 5, at 8 p.m. This performance by the Gilbert & Sullivan Light Opera Company is the first on Long Island. Written in 1874 and not revived – even in Britain – until 2007, “Sweethearts” is considered Gilbert’s best and most popular pre-Arthur Sullivan stage work. This new version, written by Phil Gellis, for the Gilbert & Sullivan Light Opera Company, includes appropriate music from the G&S canon to complement the stage action. Tickets are $20; available at (516) 795-7745 or www.gilbert-and-sullivan.net or www.theatermania.com. Ethical Humanist Society, 38 Old County Rd., Garden City.
