As a New York State Licensed Psychologist, Dr. Robert Lancer specializes in treating individuals with OCD. His approach is unique, in that he strives to learn more about the disorder by focusing on the patient's perspective. If indicated, he will work with psychiatrists to further help the patient's recovery.

For the average (non-OCD) person, it is difficult to understand how obsessive thoughts and compulsions are generated. The thought process of an individual with OCD is different. "Faulty circuitry" in the brain can cause intrusive thoughts, unwanted images and repetitive obsessions.

Common obsessions include the fear of germs or dirt, hoarding, aggressiveness or thoughts of violence, pathological doubt, and those that are sexually or religiously related. Compulsions can include checking and rechecking, counting, excessive washing or organizing, rumination and seeking reassurance to the extreme. These acts and thoughts are usually exhausting and anxiety provoking to the person with OCD.

Dr. Lancer uses talk therapy in conjunction with response prevention therapy. Whenever necessary, he will work side by side with the patient to help them stop obsessive thinking and mental or physical compulsions. For example, not only will he generate homework and assignments, but he is also willing to help the patient approach his or her obsessions, hands-on.

He will be there to help the individual stop using the compulsion (such as a ritualistic act) to neutralize unwanted thoughts. Each week, his treatment plan takes on a larger step, helping the patient to build up a tolerance to their anxieties, thus gaining control over the OCD.

Considered a master on the subject of OCD, Dr. Lancer has spoken at conferences in San Diego, Chicago, Philadelphia and parts of Europe. He founded the Long Island division of Giving Obsessive Compulsive Another Lifestyle (G.O.A.L.) in Huntington, NY, as well as the Young Teen Discussion Panel for the National Obsessive Compulsive Foundation in New Haven, CT.

Dr. Lancer has put together a comprehensive Web site to help educate people and share ideas - www.nyocd.com. He invites readers to check it out, learn and ask questions. He offers free consultations, and his fees are on a sliding scale. While his practice specializes in OCD, he treats other psychological issues and disorders as well.
