Elect Brohm, Schindler, Greaves in West Hempstead

In West Hempstead, Karen Brohm, the current school board president, is running for another term unopposed. Rudy Schindler, a trustee for six years, is also without an opponent. Both were instrumental in the passage of the district’s recent $35.5 million bond, which will facilitate much-needed capital improvements to its properties as well as several of its programs.

The real race is between Patricia Greaves, the incumbent with one year of trustee experience, and newcomer Steven Feldman, an attorney who says he is pro-education and is concerned about high taxes. Feldman has saidhe shares the sentiment of those who in recent years have purchased homes in West Hempstead that are above the hamlet’s median value, and are paying higher taxes because of it.

While Feldman has admirable legal experience, a background in caring for special-needs children as a volunteer and years of representing minority groups, we believe that Greaves is the better choice. A teacher for 19 years, she currently teaches special education in Baldwin Middle School. She knows the complexities of educational reform issues, and helped the district get the bond passed. Her goals include shrinking the achievement gap affecting minority learners and getting more support for students who are English language learners.

We endorse her.
