Giving back to K-Kids who give

In preparation for Halloween, members of the West Hempstead Court Aktion Club, aided by Key Club members from Division 6 and Circle K members from Adelphi University, packed goodie bags for the Kiwanis Club International K-Kids of Bowling Green and Franklin Square last week.

Upon learning that the two K-Kids clubs would be foregoing trick-or-treating for candy to fundraise for Kiwanis International’s new Worldwide Service Project ELIMINATE, the Aktion, Key and Circle K members decided to thank the K-Kids by replacing some of their lost Halloween candy.

The K-family members packed more than 100 goodie bags with chocolate bars, pixie sticks, bubble gum, sweet tarts, tootsie rolls, lollipops and free McDonald’s cheeseburger coupons and gave them to Bowling Green K-Kids faculty advisor Rich Santer and Franklin Square K-Kids Kiwanis advisor Julie Davis-Olson to distribute to their K-Kids.

The West Hempstead Court Aktion Club has eight members who are residents of a group home for disabled adults. Members of the Key Club of Division 6 and of Circle K from Adelphi University attend each of the Aktion Club meetings to assist the members with their service projects. Every other week, the Aktion Club does a different service project ranging from placing Independence Day flags on the lawns of the group home’s neighbors to creating Make-A-Smile cards for chronically ill children.

Aktion Club advisor Diann Forquignon pulls no punches when she says the group would not be able to function as a community service club without the support of the Key Club and Circle K. “These young people help the Aktion Clubbers read, write and executive fine motor tasks,” Forquignon said.
