Malverne High School students among honorees at photography show in Freeport

The Arts Council at Freeport welcomed 30 aspiring photographers to honor their works during a reception at the Freeport Memorial Library on Nov. 8. Students from Malverne, Baldwin and Long Beach high schools attended the reception with their families and receive certificates of recognition.

Baldwin High School senior, Andrea Zambrano said she took part in the show as an effort to experiment with portrait photography, lighting and color. Titling her submission, “Cotton Candy,” a picture of pink neon lights reflecting on her cousin’s sunglasses while she ate cotton candy, she shared it was one of her favorite pictures and happy to have it on display.

The photography show, “Kaleidoscope: Long Island Student’s Point of View Photography” was initially judged by Dave Lyons, the photo editor from Newsday. According to the executive director of the Arts Council, Larry Dresner, the organization received hundreds of entries, but the display at the library highlighted the best.

“This is a fantastic exhibit that really showcases the arts in education,” Dresner said.

Dresner also shared that the teenage photography show was the first of its kind in Freeport and will become a new tradition and program the Art Council will support moving forward.

“We’re really looking forward to next year’s show,” Dresner said.
