Stepping Out

Of those sugar plum fairies

Posted

The Sugar Plum and her Cavalier continue to dance their way across area stages. Fans of The Nutcracker will find performances this weekend at Hofstra University and Tilles Center.

Frank Ohman’s New York Dance Theatre presents its version of the holiday treat, when the production arrives at Hofstra University for its 28th season of The Nutcracker, Friday through Sunday. It is the only one on Long Island that is modeled after the Lincoln Center production, according to Ohman, a former New York City Ballet soloist, and is performed in the Balanchine tradition from storyline to choreography.

Ohman puts his own twist on the production, with original scenes and sequences. Over the last few years he has blended incidental Tchaikovsky music into the original score to create a special lullaby for Clara and her Nutcracker, as well as a sequence between the naughty Fritz and a dancing bear. Then, in act II, he has added new choreography to the Kingdom of Sweets.

The production features New York City Ballet soloist Arch Higgins, Nicole Loizides of MOMIX and Eric Ragan, formerly with the Suzanne Farrell Ballet. See The Nutcracker at Hofstra University’s John Cranford Adams Playhouse, Friday, Dec. 18, 11 and 8 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 19-20, 12 and 5 p.m. $35, $28 seniors and children; $18 for Friday’s 11 a.m. show. Or see Long Island’s professional dance company, Eglevsky Ballet, when the troupe performs its annual spectacular version, choreographed by artistic director Ali Pourfarrokh. The company’s 26 dancers are joined by guest artists Violeta Angelova and Momchil Mladenov, principal dancers with the Suzanne Farrell Ballet, who dance the roles of the Sugar Plum Fairy and the Cavalier. The performance features 66 Long Island dance students, selected through competitive auditions. It’s performed at Tilles Center for the Performing Arts, Saturday through Monday.

This year’s production honors Marina Eglevsky, the ballerina and daughter of the Eglevsky Ballet’s founder, the late New York City Ballet star André Eglevsky. Eglevsky, who has continued her father’s work, is honored at a gala event, following Sunday’s show, at 4:30 p.m. Tickets for the Dec. 20 gala are $60, $15 for children 12 and under. For information or to purchase tickets, call (516) 746-1115 or info@eglevskyballet.com.

The four performances take place Saturday, Dec. 19, at 2 and 7 p.m.; Sunday, Dec. 20, 2 p.m.; Monday, Dec. 21, 6 p.m. Tickets are $60, $50, $35 ($57, $47, $32 seniors.); available (516) 299-3100 or (800) 745-3000 or www.ticketmaster.com.
