Nassau County police arrested a Long Beach man after he allegedly beat and attempted to rob a woman in West Hempstead on Thursday — and injured a police officer during a struggle while in custody.

Police said Long Beach resident Antwan Brown, 24, was involved in an argument with a woman in the parking lot of White Castle at 19 Hempstead Turnpike in West Hempstead on Nov. 25 at 3:55 a.m. As he sat in a car with the 24-year-old woman and the pair argued, police said Brown attempted to take the woman’s bag, which contained $200.

Brown repeatedly hit the woman in the head and face before he fled the scene, police said. The victim suffered facial injuries and was treated at the scene.
Police located Brown a short time later and arrested him. While in custody at the Fifth Precinct, police said that Brown resisted verbal directions continuously and struggled with police officers. One officer suffered facial injuries as a result, police said. The officer was treated and released from at a local hospital.
Brown was charged with second-degree attempted robbery and two counts of second-degree assault. He was arraigned at First District Court in Hempstead on Friday, Nov. 26.
