West Hempstead resident Akiva Ackerman, 12, won three gold medals in table tennis at the Mid-Atlantic Junior Maccabi Games that were held on Sunday, May 22, at the Katz Jewish Community Center in Cherry Hill, N.J.

Akiva, who was on the Mid-Westchester JCC team, won the Round Robin competition, open singles tournament and doubles event, finishing with a perfect record of 13-0. The Hebrew Academy of Nassau County seventh-grader, the only New York representative, defeated players from Baltimore, Philadelphia, Delaware and New Jersey.

The Maccabi Games bring together athletes from all along the east coast for competition in basketball, soccer, tennis and baseball in a display of Jewish pride and unity. According to Akiva’s father, Glenn, the young ping pong pro will continue practicing to reach his goal of making the USA Table Tennis national team for the 2013 Olympics.
