Celebration turned to sorrow earlier this month when a gunman opened fired at a birthday party in Lakeview, killing one man and wounding two others.

More than 100 people spilled out onto Locust Court around 1:15 a.m. on Saturday, June 12, after shots rang out over the loud music and chatter, waking neighbors and sending people running for their lives.

Police were already en route to the house, responding to neighbors' complaints of a "large, loud party," when a second 911 call came in reporting that shots were fired. Upon arrival at 420 Locust Court, officers found 25-year-old Hempstead resident Bryan Coardes shot to death and two others wounded.

According to police, two men, ages 17 and 27, were shot in their arms. They were transported to South Nassau Communities Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Nassau County Police Lieutenant Kevin Smith said it appeared that a party-goer had been standing in the street outside the home when he took out weapons and started shooting. Coardes was shot several times in the upper torso and died at the scene, Smith said.

Police said they do no believe Coardes was specifically targeted and they are offering a $5,000 reward for information about the shooting. Cops are asking anyone with information regarding the incident to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS (8477). All callers will remain anonymous.
