Stepping Out

Reach for the skies at Cradle of Aviation Museum

Welcome the new year with some family fun

Posted

‘Tis still the season for some holiday fun. Before you get ready to ring in the New Year, or during New Year’s weekend, check out the Cradle of Aviation Museum’s holiday break activities. The museum is open throughout the New Year’s weekend, with exhibits, a full schedule of movies in its Grumman Giant Screen Theater – featuring “Legends of Flight” and “Grand Canyon” – and special holiday activities.

The museum features a Science of Toys workshop, through Friday, Dec. 31, 12-4 p.m. Now that the holidays have brought the kids a cart of toys, discover the science behind how some popular toys work. Two alternating workshops allow families to explore the classic “Thaumatrope” and “Balance Bird”! Each half hour program will have fun hands-on demonstrations and great make and take activities.

Another program, Discovery Carts, also ongoing through Friday, 12-4 p.m. involves hands-on activities in the museum’s galleries, including “Early Flight”, “WWII” or “Space Exploration.” Each ‘cart’ includes a series of activities that communicate the significance of the exhibits they represent and showcases important principles, concepts and museum artifacts.

For families who visit the museum over the New Year’s weekend, be sure to venture over to the craft table and make a space-related project to take home.

The Cradle of Aviation Museum is located on Museum Row, off Charles Lindbergh Blvd., in Garden City. For more information, call (516) 572-4066 or visit www.cradleofaviation.org.
