Speaking out for the silenced

Sacred Heart Academy held an informative presentation and candlelight vigil in memory of victims of domestic violence and sex trafficking on March 20.

The event featured speeches by Sacred Heart students who exposed the truths and misconceptions about modern day slavery. Sophomore Sarah Nicholson delivered a detailed PowerPoint presentation on the International Violence Against Women Act, which is a piece of legislation intended to ensure that American foreign policy focuses on the protection of women across the globe.

FBI Victim Specialist Laura Riso also spoke at the event to inform guests about signs and circumstances of women caught in human trafficking circles.

At the vigil, Sacred Heart students, faculty and parents gathered on the school’s front lawn to light candles, hold signs and pray for victims of domestic and sexual abuse.
