Corbin, Troiano vie to represent county’s 2nd Legislative District

The Nassau County Legislature’s 2nd District Democratic primary will pit Roger Corbin, who has held the seat since 1996, against Robert Troiano, a longtime North Hempstead town councilman.

The two candidates are vying to represent a district that includes Lakeview, portions of West Hempstead, East Meadow, Westbury and New Cassel, among other areas.

During his campaign for re-election in 2007, Corbin said he wanted to push for improvements and expansions of hospitals throughout the county to help patients avoid delays in receiving medical attention. He helped to advance that goal last year when he joined an effort to provide $61 million in funding to improve health care service delivery at the Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow. The money, NUMC officials said, will fund emergency room upgrades and other enhancements at the facility.

Corbin, 62, also recently worked with NUMC officials to relocate one of the center’s medical clinics to a bigger building on South Franklin Avenue in Hempstead, which, he said, will provide patients with easier access to health care.

Other highlights of Corbin’s current term were his efforts with community leaders to revitalize parks, roads and facilities in the district. Most notably, he said, he worked alongside County Executive Tom Suozzi over the past year to secure $2 million in funding for road and aesthetic improvements along South Franklin Avenue. He also helped provide county funding to maintain the Tanglewood Preserve in Lakeview and Rockville Centre.

“I’m always fighting to beautify the communities in this district and keep them looking the way residents want them to look,” Corbin said. “I’m proud of the progress that we have made this term, and I want to continue to serve so more changes can be made.”

In December, after a 13-year effort by Corbin, Woodfield Road, between Lakeview and Hempstead Avenues, was renamed Derrick Adkins Road in honor of Olympic gold medalist and Lakeview resident Derrick Adkins. Corbin also helped secure county funding last year so District 12 officials could install a new all-weather track at Malverne High School.
