Two women were arrested last week for assaulting three police officers who were trying to arrest a man in West Hempstead, Nassau County police said.
According to police, 20-year-old Shakeva Wright and Lashana Coleman, 29, "set upon" the officers the night of Tuesday, March 16, as they tried to arrest Joseph Wright, 18, in the parking lot of the Courtesy Hotel, located at 130 Hempstead Avenue.
Police had arrived at the scene around 9:20 p.m., responding to a call that a verbal altercation between two individuals in the parking lot escalated into a blowout: Joseph Wright, of Valley Stream, repeatedly jumped on the hood of the victim's car and kicked in the driver's side quarter panel, causing extensive damage. When officers tried to arrest him for criminal mischief, he resisted. Then the two women, who were with him in the parking lot, began attacking the officers, police said.
During the struggle, one officer was kicked in the head and suffered a concussion. Another officer suffered a knee injury and a third suffered both a knee injury and a fractured wrist. The officers were transported to an area hospital where they were treated and released.
Fifth Squad detectives charged Joseph Wright with criminal mischief, obstructive governmental administration and resisting arrest. Shakeva Wright, of Uniondale, and Coleman, of Valley Stream, were both charged with assault, obstructing governmental administration and resisting arrest.
All three were arraigned in First District Court in Hempstead on Wednesday, March 17. Judge Michael Ciaffa set Joseph Wright's and Coleman's bail at $8,000 bond or $4,000 cash. Shakeva Wright's bail was set at $10,000 bond or $5,000 cash.
