Troop 240 provides talk time for U.S. troops

Members of West Hempstead Boy Scout Troop 240 met success in their attempt to collect cell phones for Cell Phones for Soldiers, a nonprofit organization that collects old cell phones and recycles them.

The troop placed a collection box at the West Hempstead Public Library from September to January: residents donated 42 cell phones. The Scouts sent the phones to Cell Phones for Soldiers, which uses the money it received for recycling the phones to purchase calling cards for deployed and returning military personnel, and learned that their efforts will provide soldiers with 1,260 minutes of talk time.

“The Scouts of Troop 240 would like to thank the library and the residents of West Hempstead for their support,” said Steven Trezza, the troop’s project coordinator. Those who have additional cell phones they would like to donate may drop them off at the Garden City Police Department, at 349 Stewart Ave., or visit the website  www.cellphonesforsoldiers.com.
