On June 4 at its annual picnic celebration at Hempstead Lake State Park, West Hempstead Boy Scout Troop 240 honored Henry Miller, its treasurer, for his 35 years of service to the troop.

Roughly 60 turned out for the event, where Miller, a West Hempstead resident, received an award of recognition and was lauded for his longtime commitment.

“Everyone had a good time — it was very special,” said Susan DeFilippis, a committee member and event organizer with Troop 240. “He’s always donated his time. He comes to every single meeting and different functions, and we couldn’t function without him.”

Miller, 76, known to many as Ed, said he was surprised by the honor, though he remained grateful. “It was a surprise,” he told the Herald. “I’ve been with them so long. I was happy.”

Miller, who has four children — two of whom were scouts with Troop 240 — said he looks forward to continuing to serve as part of the troop for years to come.

“We have 50 boys, and we’re expecting more next year,” he said. “I like the people, and we always have good times.”
