“It’s nice to be acknowledged, but I do not need to be,” said graduating West Hempstead High School senior Joseph DiMarco. “I just want to use my abilities to be useful.”

DiMarco, 18, a West Hempstead resident who has been described by many as a charitable and active member of the community, was honored on June 4 at this year’s West Hempstead High School Senior Awards Night at the high school auditorium. DiMarco was presented with the first ever West Hempstead Chamber of Commerce award by Chamber President Karl Riesterer.

According to Chamber member Manny Martinez, the Chamber of Commerce decided in January to hold an essay- writing contest for graduating seniors.

“The West Hempstead High School Guidance Department notified seniors that they could win the Chamber award by submitting an essay of 250 words or less about showing an interest in starting their own business, or providing examples of entrepreneurial aspirations,” Martinez said.

Martinez added: “It was an idea that we came up with as a way to give back to the community,” he said. “We are considering more awards in the future if our budget allows.”

In his essay, DiMarco proposed the idea of a “green” consulting firm, where he would work with various companies finding new ways to foster and implement more eco-friendly practices.

The award is one of many DiMarco has received to date. Karen Schreiber, a guidance counselor at West Hempstead High School, said that DiMarco has also been the recipient of the New York State Academic Excellence Award, the West Hempstead Community Support Association Service Award, and the New York State Comptroller Achievement Award, among others. These honors, Schreiber explained, reflect DiMarco’s commitment to excellence and community service.

Many, including Rosalie Norton, president of the West Hempstead Community Support Association, lauded DiMarco for his consistent community service, and his dedication to helping others in West Hempstead. On June 14, she added, DiMarco was one of three students to receive a $500 community service award from the Community Support Association for his volunteerism in the community.
