West Hempstead student honored at L.I. Science and Engineering Fair

On Feb. 14, five West Hempstead High School students — including Chris McAvoy, Steven Trezza, Alex Sabella, Jordan Bak, and Maria Zambuto — presented their work at the 2012 Long Island Science and Engineering Fair (LISEF) at the Crest Hollow Country Club.

McAvoy was chosen as a semifinalist and later competed in the final round on March 19 at the Cradle of Aviation Museum in Garden City. He was awarded the Innovative Engineering Award from the National Society of Professional Engineers, Most Outstanding 11th Grade Project in Engineering from the Yale Science and Engineering Association and the 2012 Outstanding Sustainability Award from the International Sustainable World Energy Engineering Environment Project Olympiad with an invitation to compete as an international finalist is Houston, Texas. His project is entitled, “Biomimetic Wind Turbine Blade Power Analysis: Airfoil Design.”

The LISEF is one of 400 worldwide regional INTEL International Science and Engineering Fairs, and one of the largest and most competitive regional fairs worldwide with 533 students from 67 schools.
