Authorities said a former inmate attacked a corrections officer at the Nassau County Correctional Center in East Meadow, and bit him in the process.
Sharrief Yelverton, 31, of West Hempstead, was arrested on April 1 after he allegedly became involved in a verbal and physical confrontation with a corrections officer stationed at Gatehouse No. 1 at about 5 p.m., police said. According to detectives, Yelverton did not follow the officers' direction, and when told to leave the property, the defendant pushed the guard. When the officer attempted to apprehend the man, Yelverton bit him in the hand, police said.
Jail officials said Yelverton approached the officer and requested to visit an inmate. After being told to wait in line with the other visitors, the officials said, Yelverton proceeded to yell at the officer, push him, and attempted to take the guard's service handgun as the struggle ensued.
With assistance from a visitor, Yelverton was subdued by the officer and placed under arrest, authorities said.
The officer, whose name was withheld by police, sustained several injuries and was transported to Winthrop University Hospital in Mineola for treatment, police said.
Yelverton was arraigned on Friday, April 2, at First District Court in Hempstead on charges of resisting arrest, third-degree criminal trespass and second-degree assault. Judge Terrence Murphy ordered Yelverton, who pleaded not guilty to the charges, held on bail of $40,000 bond or $20,000 cash. He is due back in court on April 6.
