Detectives with the Nassau County Police Department’s Fifth Squad arrested a West Hempstead man last week after he allegedly assaulted two police officers.

On Friday, Nov. 25, an employee of the CVS store on Hempstead Avenue in West Hempstead recognized 50-year-old Laroy Floyd, of Holly Place, as a man who had previously been accused of shoplifting at the store. When he asked Floyd to leave the premises, Floyd allegedly threatened him with a walking stick he was carrying. The employee called police and reported the incident. Floyd fled the scene on foot but was located a short time later near the intersection of Hempstead and Eagle Avenues by responding police officers.

As the officers attempted to secure Floyd’s walking stick, Floyd allegedly resisted and swung the stick, striking an officer in the face. Police said a struggle ensued and Floyd was placed in custody.

Two police officers were transported to a local hospital: one officer sustained a fractured nose and contusions to his left knee, and the other sustained lacerations and contusions to his right hand and right knee. Both officers were treated and released.

Floyd was charged with two counts of second-degree assault, two counts of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, second-degree menacing and resisting arrest. He was arraigned at First District Court in Hempstead on Nov. 26, and bail was set at $10,000 bond or $5,000 cash. Floyd, who was due back in court on Nov. 29, is represented by Legal Aid Society, which does not comment on its cases.
