A visibly overwhelmed James Scannell, who was officially announced as the next superintendent of Baldwin schools at a Board of Education meeting on April 10, didn’t know when to stop shaking hands. A standing ovation followed board President Kim Taylor’s reading of the personnel action appointing Scannell, and the superintendent-elect rose and proceeded down a long table, beaming and accepting the congratulations of his colleagues. more

The Baldwin school district issued layoff notices to 99 of its teachers at the beginning of the month. The news was met with gasps from most associated with the district, but according to both the Baldwin Teachers Association and the district, the situation, while far from rosy, may not be as bleak as it first appears. more
As expected, the Baldwin school board last week unanimously adopted a budget proposal for 2013-14. The plan was hashed out during a series of public meetings and work sessions over the last few months, and includes a 7 percent tax levy increase. more
