No one in Baldwin will forget the fire on May 3, 2010, that savaged several small businesses and apartments on Merrick Road, but the owners and tenants are, for the most part, trying to move on and rebuild. Chief among them is restaurateur Joe Russo, 57, owner of the New Old Venice Inn, one of Baldwin’s oldest businesses.

The eastbound side of the Sunrise Highway was shut down sometime between 9:15 and 9:45 a.m. on Wednesday when Merrick Fire Department volunteers responded to a car fire that consumed a black Audi.

A massive storm dumped nearly 10 inches of rain on the Merrick-Bellmore area from Saturday night into Sunday afternoon, flooding the Meadowbrook Parkway and homes throughout the community. At the storm’s height, rain was falling at a rate of more than an inch an hour.

Dressed in a black blouse and blue jeans, Carol Gies stood silently on Tuesday morning, her chin in her hands, her elbows resting on a crane that was lifting a twisted World Trade Center girder into the parking lot at the Merrick Fire Department’s Friendship Engine and Hose Company.
Gies, who lost her husband, Ronnie, in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, looked forlorn.

The Nassau County Police Department has closed Merrick Road in both directions at the intersection of Saratoga Street due to a transformer fire.
Drivers are advised to use alternate routes.

In the wake of a fatal May 18 blaze that claimed the life of Baldwin firefighter Michael Esposito — the 21-year department veteran suffered a heart attack en route to the fire — Emery Jackson, who lives next door to the home that burned at 2870 Grand Ave., is alleging that dangerous conditions have existed on the property for at least a decade. Jackson said he had feared that a tragedy would occur there, even as hundreds of firefighters and neighbors were gathering to mourn the popular Esposito.

Michael Esposito, a 43-year-old former captain of the Baldwin Fire Department, died early May 18 of a heart attack. He began feeling the symptoms while en route to a fire at 2870 Grand Ave.
