Mark Romanowski joined the Albertson Soccer Club’s elite academy team in the fall of 2011, when he entered his junior year at South Side High School in Rockville Centre. The decision did not come easily for Romanowski, who is now 17 and a senior at South Side. He had played for the Rockville Centre Soccer Club since he was in third grade, and he loved his club.

In what’s become an era of specialization, the three-sport high school athlete is a dying breed, albeit far from extinct. Finding a three-sport varsity head coach is much more difficult, but they do exist.
With all due respect to those pulling triple duty in cross-country, winter track and field, and spring track and field in what seems like every school in the Herald’s coverage area, coaching three entirely different sports put Baldwin’s Darius Burton, East Rockaway’s Joe Lores, Long Beach’s T.J. Burke and West Hempstead’s Chris Van Kovics in select company.

Did you hear about the quiet fitness parade that occurs every summer in Baldwin? I am referring to a small contingent of Baldwinites who take advantage of the warm weather, and the peace and quiet once Baldwin Senior High School shuts down, to hit the track and to get in shape.

Hidden away in room 111 at the Baldwin Senior High School is a café that’s brewing up much more than coffee. The location isn’t great — Cup-o-Joe is wedged between a bathroom and an elevator — and the baristas can’t whip you up a low-fat, half-caff latte with extra foam and cinnamon. But that’s not really what this establishment is all about. It is, rather, a place where special education students in BHS’s Life Skills program can gain real-world work experience in a safe and familiar space.

Dominick Famularo, 85, as beloved a figure as you’ll find in Baldwin, finally received his high school diploma last week. It was bestowed at a special Board of Education meeting that also celebrated the service of retiring district personnel.

Former New York Giant Keith Davis and former New England Patriot Devin Wyman served as keynote speakers when the Winners Inc. program visited Baldwin High School on May 25. The appearance was spearheaded by the efforts of Assemblyman Brian Curran (R - Lynbrook,) who felt that the presence of the two distinguished speakers would bolster spirits in Baldwin.

What began with a group of English as a Second Language students unable to afford prom attire has blossomed into a dress drive that may become an annual event. In the days before last year’s prom, Baldwin High School ESL teacher Adeline Scibelli faced a dilemma: A group of her students, some of them recently arrived from Haiti, were unable to afford the extravagant dresses that are all but the rule at proms in the U.S.

The Oxford Dictionary defines bullying as “the use of a superior strength or influence to intimidate someone.” When thinking of a bully, automatically one paints a picture of a hefty boy with spiky hair, holding a smaller kid against a locker. On television, the cafeteria in a high school rings while a bully is heard saying, “Give me your lunch money,” or, “Buy me lunch!”
